Beachcomber
Erik Hammond, a third-generation beachcomber, could very well be among the last. With the high costs of equipment and gas and the dwindling return on logs, beachcombing is now a sunset industry.
The Globe and Mail staff photojournalist John Lehmann accompanied Mr. Hammond and his partner, George Moore, aboard Mr. Hammond’s tugboat, Déjà Vu, as they scavenged for logs along the coastline in and around Gibsons, British Columbia. The ocean community is where the popular television show “The Beachcombers” was filmed.
